Maureillas is a typical small French village, with a population of around 3000. It was once a centre for cork and wine production. There are many beautiful walks through the nearby cork forests and vineyards, with stunning views of Mont Canigou in the nearby Pyrenees.

The village is well served by a butchers, 2 bakers, 2 grocers, a paper shop, the wine cave, (where you can taste before buying the locally produced wine), a tabac and bar/café/restaurant. There is also a chemist, doctors, dentist and cork museum. There are other larger shops in the nearby towns of Le Boulou and Ceret.

The river Maureillas flows at the side of the park, which has a small childrens playground and a boules pitch. The park is also the venue, in the summer for outdoor events - eating, drinking and dancing most weekends.
